Hodgepodge Wednesday ~ Summertime and the Living is HOT!

Welcome to this week’s Hodgepodge! =)

1. Since you weren’t Hodgepodging last Wednesday, how did you pass the time?

I enjoyed a bit of a break from blogging and spent some precious time with my younger children. My son and I created a vocabulary jar. A jar filled with slips of paper containing vocabulary words. A fun way for him to learn new words and practice his reading. The trick is to choose a new word from the jar each day and use it in as many sentences as possible in our daily conversation. Today’s word was VALUE, to which my son randomly replied…”I value that you are my mother.” Such a sweetie…I think he gets the concept.

2. What’s the first word that comes to mind when I say marriage? Yes, one word.

GIVE.  When I got married over 23 years ago, my grandmother gave me a piece of advice, that I have never forgotten. She told me “In marriage you have to give and keep giving even when it is just one sided.”  Many times, this advice has saved me from much heartache and many instances where a disagreement could have become an argument. ‘Give’ a little word that packs a lot of punch.

3. Summer officially arrives in the Northern hemishpere later this week. Does it feel like summer where you live? Describe your idea of the perfect summer day.
Oh, summer is definitely here in North Carolina. The temps are in the upper 90’s and the humidity is here to stay. My perfect summer day would include a nap in a hammock under the shade trees, a glass of iced tea in hand and a good book…preferably there would be a breeze in the air too! 😉

4. “Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.”(Sam Keen) Is laziness ever respectable? Do you have a lazy summer planned, or something semi-ambitious?One of my favorite authors wrote a line that reads “The beauty of doing nothing, is the goal of all your work…” She also states that Americans are very poor at relaxing…at doing absolutely nothing.  I believe there is an art to relaxing. We have far to many gadgets and connections these days to fully disconnect. So many times when I visit Facebook, I think…”Do I really need to know what so and so had for dinner??”
I do not believe in being lazy. But I do think relaxation is vital to human life.

5. Past or present, who’s your favorite television dad? Why is he a favorite? Is he anything like your own dad?I love Bill Cosby’s Heathcliff Huxtable. He is such a funny guy and such fun to be around. He reminds me a little of my own husband’s sense of humor. Humor makes everything better.

6. June 18th is International Picnic Day…share a favorite picnic memory. One of my favorite picnic memories dates from when I was a little girl around the age of maybe 3 or 4. My parents and I along with my Granny (the one who made blackberry cobbler) were in the Great Smokey Mountains of Tennessee at a picnic area. It was fall, there were a lot of leaves. My Granny wore one of her dresses. There were lots and lots of yellow jackets. They were the dickens! They wouldn’t leave us alone. One or maybe a few got up the skirt of my Granny’s dress, and she danced and hopped around trying to get away from them.  Don’t worry no one gets stung in this story. We just a had a good laugh about my Granny’s dancing skills. Fun memories are what makes life worthwhile.
My Granny. She was a joy, always laughing. =)

7. The travel site Trip Advisor lists the top five islands in the world for 2014 as-Ambergris Caye in Belize CayesProvidenciales in Turks and CaicosBora Bora in French PolynesiaMarco Island Florida, and Lewis and Harris in The Outer Hebrides (Scotland). Have you been to any of these? Of those listed (and if price were not a factor) which would you most like to book for a holiday?
I have never been to any of these. But a holiday to Scotland sounds fabulous. Mmmm…maybe someday will have to put it on the bucket list. =)

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

A garden in full bloom is a wonderful sight.

Hope your week is lovely! Blessings and Sunshine, Valerie

Beautiful photo of your grandmother and wonderful post.

  4. I enjoyed your Hodgepodge! And I so agree with the word 'GIVE' for marriage. Too many hunker down and wait for the other person to 'give.' It just doesn't work that way. Love your shaggy creations.
