Sunshine Blogger Quiz Getting To Know The Voice Behind Lilac and Lyme Blog

My Illness Does Not Define Me,It Is Just A Small Part Of Who I Am.

Stepping Outside the Box

This post is definitely not my norm, but sometimes it is fun to branch outside of the box and do something different. So, if you generally read my blog for Lyme and chronic illness posts, bear with me.

I hope you enjoy this quick glimpse of “who the voice is,” behind Lilac and Lyme blog. I will be back to posting more Lyme and chronic illness awareness content next week, so stay tuned!

Like we so often hear within the chronic illness community, my illness does not define me, it is just a part of who I am.

The Joy of Getting to Know Other Bloggers

Since I launched my Lilac and Lyme blog site this past October, I have had the joy and privilege of “meeting” some of the most wonderful ladies and even a few gentlemen who make blog land the wonderful place that it is! I have really enjoyed being a part of the numerous networks that I am a member of.

One of these wonderful bloggers is Chandra the lovely authoress of the beautiful blog Italian Belly. Chandra’s blog is a wonderful place where you can learn about all things Italian! She is an Expat of Canada and writes about the lifestyle and cuisine of Northern Italy. I always learn something new when I visit with Chandra. Take a moment to pay her a visit and you will be glad that you did!

The Sunshine Blogger Quiz

I was recently nominated by Chandra to participate in the Sunshine Blogger Quiz! While I had never heard of this quiz, I enjoyed reading her answers to the questions. If you are interested, you can read Chandra’s answers to the quiz here: Sunshine Blogger Quiz ~ Italian Belly Style. I also love the name of the quiz, after all who doesn’t love a little sunshine?

The idea behind the quiz is to get to know other bloggers through a series of question and answer posts.

In keeping with the title Sunshine Blogger, the questions are generally light-hearted and fun! This is just an enjoyable way of getting to know our blogging community a bit better! So without further rambling, the quiz!

Getting to know the voice behind the blog

Chandra asked me the following questions:

Why did you start your blog?

I am an artist of Pembroke Welsh Corgi art. When I began my original blog, All Things Corgi and Beyond, back in 2006, I wanted to share my Corgi art with the world. Blogging was the perfect way to do that! You can view some of my Corgi art here: Shaggycreations and also in my Etsy Shop here: Shaggycreations Studio.

Over the past several years as my health has steadily declined, my blog has evolved from a hobby blog to the current Lyme awareness platform that it is today!

I launched Lilac and Lyme in October of last year, just seven months after being diagnosed with late stage Lyme disease. It has been such a rewarding experience! I have “met” some lovely people who have encouraged me beyond measure.

It is my hope to bring a greater awareness to Lyme disease and hopefully to help educate the general public about this silent epidemic that is sweeping not only the United States but the world!

What are you currently reading/watching?

I adore classic literature. Currently I am working my way through Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables series. As a child these were some of my favorite books. L.M. Montgomery’s descriptions are so gorgeous. It is like taking a personal trip to Prince Edward Island every time I sit down with one of her wonderful books.

Since I have neurological Lyme disease and severe chronic fatigue, I struggle with reading and writing the written word. I received a Kindle Fire tablet as a Christmas present and it has been an absolute life saver! If at any time I do not feel like reading, I can listen to the books on audio and the Kindle does the job of holding the book for me.

Be Kind!

Which three words describe you best?

I am above all a very quiet person. Chronic illness has been a big contributor of this trait, because life with chronic fatigue and severe pain can silence even the most talkative of people. My fatigue makes even the simplest of conversations difficult.

Although, as a child I was quite shy, I now realize that it is just my in-born nature to listen rather than chatter. I’ve never been a big fan of small talk. But, I do enjoy meaningful conversations with my friends and family.

Don’t get me wrong, I do not suffer from an ego problem. I would not openly say that I am “kind.” Although, I have always been compassionate to the less fortunate.

I grew up near the big city of Charlotte, North Carolina. Quite often we would drive into the city for dinner out. Homeless people are a common site in big cities and we would frequently pass them standing on the street corners with a sign. I remember begging my dad to give them my pocket change one evening. It breaks my heart to see the suffering of so many in this world.

It is my wish that in some small way my little corner of blog land can be a place of help and hope to those who are struggling with chronic illness. I am a huge fan of the saying, “Be kind.”

Honesty is something that is lacking in the world. Integrity is difficult to come by. I try to hold myself to high standards. Everything I write here on the blog is an honest account of my experiences. I strive for authenticity in everything I do.

It is my hope that my readers can find something that they can identify with when they read my blog posts.

Stand for Something or You'll Fall For Anything

What are you most afraid of?

I think what I fear the most is the kind of world that my children will find twenty or thirty years from now. We live in an age where anything goes. Human kindness and decency have fallen by the wayside.

Pollution is at an all time high. So many of our food sources are contaminated with preservatives and pesticides. Mediocrity is rewarded, and often encouraged. I frequently tell my children that, “You have to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything.” I want to leave a positive imprint on the world for future generations, even if it just means recycling my plastic and being kind to my neighbors.

Chronic Illness and Travel

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

I love to travel. When I became severely sick over the past two decades, my ability to travel long distances vanished. I miss the thrill of the open road and just packing up at the spur of the moment for a weekend get away.

If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would love to visit the gorgeous Hawaiian islands. I have always wanted to go there! Who can resist white sand beaches and sea breezes?

What do you eat for breakfast?

Generally I eat gluten-free oatmeal. I like to top it with fruit and honey. But, in the summer I am a fan of fruit smoothies.

What's For Breakfast

Seared Ahi Tuna steak or med-rare T-Bone steak?

I am not a huge fan of tuna, so I would probably say steak. But, filet mignon would be my cut of choice and medium well please. I prefer that my beef not “moo” while on the plate. Ha! Ha!

What is your favorite movie?

Stealing Beauty with Liv Tyler and Jeremy Irons is my absolute favorite movie of all time. The Italian countryside is gorgeous. I would watch this movie at least once a month, just to see the Tuscan hills.

Would you rather travel back in time to 1900 or travel into the future to the year 3000? Why?

Even thought the 1900’s are often romanticized, I do not think I would want to travel back to that time. Women did not have the right to vote and the social classes ran the show.

The future isn’t all that appealing either. Hopefully the world will be a better place by that time. I like to think so! But, I much prefer to stay right here in the good old present day. I live by the saying, “Bloom where you are planted.”

Bloom Where You Are Planted.

What’s your hidden talent?

I don’t know if you would call this a hidden talent or just a weird sort of ESP, but nine times out of ten, I know who is on the phone before I ever answer it! And, no! I do not have caller ID. It is so strange.

Right! Now wasn’t that a bit of fun?

If you have made it this far, thank you for reading! I will be back next week with more chronic illness topics.

I’m tagging these lovely bloggers to join in the fun.

Hi, Valerie! I loved reading about you! I can attest, you are one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I have ever met. I only wish we had been closer geographically through the years. As you alluded to, though, we are all “planted” somewhere, so I guess we are different flowers in different fields and should bloom where we are! I will admire you from afar! 😉 I have never seen Stealing Beauty. I will have to make a point to watch that. I hope you have a sweet, restful weekend. Love and hugs to you!! Lynn
